Calculate CBM for 1688 Cartons, Pallets and Crates

Measure outer package dimensions, add up a mixed lot, and see how palletization can change volume and quote assumptions.

Measure the outer limits of each handling unit

CBM is cubic meters. For a rectangular package measured in centimeters, multiply length by width by height and divide by 1,000,000. Multiply by the count for matching packages, then add the volume of each size group. Measure the finished package at its outermost points, including pallet bases and any overhang. Give the forwarder individual dimensions for long, irregular or non-stackable items even when you can calculate a total.

Keep gross weight as a separate figure. CBM describes occupied volume. Air dimensional weight converts space to a billing weight using a service-specific ratio. A freight quote can also apply rounding, minimums, or other handling rules.

Worked example with two carton sizes

Suppose eight cartons measure 60 × 40 × 35 cm and four measure 50 × 40 × 30 cm. The first group occupies 8 × 0.084 m³, or 0.672 m³. The second occupies 4 × 0.060 m³, or 0.240 m³. The loose lot totals 0.912 m³. If the measured lot weighs 132 kg gross and a quoted air service applies a 6,000 cm³/kg divisor to the combined package volume before rounding, its illustrative dimensional weight is 152 kg. Ask whether the service rounds by piece or at shipment level before treating that figure as billable.

Recalculate after palletizing

Now suppose the supplier actually packs those cartons onto one pallet that measures 120 × 100 × 110 cm as loaded and weighs 149 kg gross. The occupied volume is now 1.32 m³, including the base and any gaps. At the same illustrative air divisor, the assembled unit would yield 220 kg dimensional weight before rounding. Quote the pallet as the handling unit when it will remain assembled, and retain the loose carton figures in the packing breakdown.

A pallet can simplify handling or meet a receiver requirement even when it increases volume. Ask whether it is stackable, whether the packaging is suitable for the chosen service, and whether the destination can unload it. Send the final pallet photo, footprint, height and measured weight if the forwarder requests confirmation.

Common questions

Can I estimate CBM from the 1688 listing dimensions?

Listing dimensions often describe the item. Use the seller’s outer packing plan for a preliminary estimate and remeasure finished cartons, crates or pallets for the quote.

Do I add the carton volume to the assembled pallet volume?

When the cartons are already on the pallet and move as one unit, count the pallet’s outside volume once. Add the volume of any separate loose cartons or crates.
